How to Check Your Brand's Visibility in AI (Free Audit Method)
How to Check Your Brand's Visibility in AI (Free Audit Method)
You can check your Google rankings in seconds. But how do you check your ranking in ChatGPT? There is no "Search Console" for OpenAI (yet). There is no SEMrush for Claude.
Most CMOs are flying blind. They have no idea if the world's most powerful AI models recommend their product or trash it.
In this engineering log, we will share the Manual AI Audit Protocol we use at GPT SEO Pro to benchmark a brand's visibility in the Generative Web.
The 3 Dimensions of AI Visibility
Before we start, you need to understand what we are measuring.
- Entity Recognition: Does the AI know you exist?
- Sentiment/Association: What adjectives does it attach to you?
- Recommendation Frequency: How often does it suggest you as a solution?
The Audit Protocol
Open three tabs: ChatGPT (GPT-4), Claude 3, and Perplexity. You need to test across models because they have different training data and "personalities."
Step 1: The "Who Are You?" Test (Entity Recognition)
Prompt: "What is [Your Brand Name]?"
- Pass: The AI gives a 100% accurate summary of your product, target market, and key value prop.
- Fail (Hallucination): The AI makes up features you don't have or confuses you with a competitor.
- Fail (Invisible): "I don't have information about [Brand Name]."
Diagnosis: If you fail this, you have a Knowledge Graph problem. You need to update your About page, Wikipedia (if applicable), and Schema markup. (See Why Schema Markup is Your API to the AI).
Step 2: The "Category Leader" Test (Share of Voice)
Prompt: "I am a [Target Persona] looking for the best [Product Category]. Suggest 5 options and explain why."
Example: "I am a startup CTO looking for a cloud database. Suggest 5 options."
- Metric: Are you on the list?
- Metric: What position (1-5)?
- Metric: What is the "Why" reasoning?
Analysis: Look at the "Why." Does it say "Best for enterprise" or "Good for small budgets"? This reveals the Vector Context the model has assigned to you. If it's wrong (e.g., you are enterprise but it calls you SMB), you need to change your content marketing to emphasize "Scale," "Security," and "Enterprise" keywords to shift the vector.
Step 3: The "Vs." Test (differentiation)
Prompt: "Compare [Your Brand] vs [Competitor X]. Be honest about the pros and cons."
This is the most critical test. This is where the AI reveals its "bias."
- Look for: What does it list as your "Cons"?
- Source Check: If using Perplexity, click the citations. Where is it getting this negative info? Often, it's a random Reddit thread or a 3-year-old review on Capterra.
Action: If the AI cites a specific negative review, you need to execute a "Content Override" campaign. Publish new, high-authority content that directly addresses that criticism (without mentioning the negative review explicitly) to "overwrite" the old weight in the model.
Step 4: The "Unbranded Problem" Test
Prompt: "How do I solve [Problem Your Product Solves]?"
Example: "How do I automate my accounts payable?"
Does the AI mention your methodology? Does it mention your brand as a tool to do it? This tests your Top of Funnel visibility. If the AI gives a generic answer without mentioning tools, you need to publish "How-to" content that explicitly links the problem to your solution in a way that gets cited.
Scoring Your Audit
Create a spreadsheet with these columns: | Model | Entity Score (0-10) | Sentiment (Pos/Neg) | Top Competitor Mentioned | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | ChatGPT | 8 | Neutral | Competitor A | | Claude | 5 | Positive | Competitor B | | Perplexity | 9 | Negative | Competitor A |
- Score < 5: You are invisible. You need foundational Entity SEO.
- Score 6-8: You are known but not preferred. You need "Co-occurrence" campaigns.
- Score 9-10: You are a market leader. Focus on defense (Reputation Management).
The "Perplexity" Special
Perplexity is unique because it cites sources. Run your category queries in Perplexity and map the citations.
- Which blogs are being cited?
- Which news sites?
- Which forums?
These are your Target Backlink List. In Traditional SEO, you want links from High DA sites. In AI SEO, you want links from High Citation Frequency sites. If Perplexity trusts "TechCrunch" for your industry, you need to be in TechCrunch. If it trusts "r/SaaS," you need to be on Reddit.
Conclusion
This audit is a snapshot in time. AI models are updated frequently. We recommend running this audit monthly.
The brands that monitor their AI visibility will be able to react and steer the narrative. Those that don't will wake up one day to find their traffic has vanished, and they won't know why.
