Does AI Content Rank? Here’s Our Test

Stop listening to "Gurus." Look at the data. We conducted a controlled experiment to answer the question: "Can Google detect and penalize AI content?"

The Methodology

Domain: Fresh .com domain (Tech niche). Sample Size: 100 Articles.

Group A (Control): 50 articles written by US-based human writers ($0.10/word).
Group B (Test): 50 articles written by GPT-4 (Standard Prompt).

Constraints:

No external backlinks built.
No internal promotion.
Keywords targeted were low-competition (KD < 20).
Both groups targeted similar keywords (e.g., "How to fix iPhone 12 screen" vs "How to fix iPhone 13 screen").

The Results (Day 30)

Group A (Human): 12 articles indexed.
Group B (AI): 15 articles indexed.

Insight: Indexing speed was identical. Google's crawler did not discriminate at the gate.

The Results (Day 90)

Group A (Human):
- Avg Position: 14.
- Traffic: 300 visits.
Group B (AI):
- Avg Position: 18.
- Traffic: 250 visits.

Insight: Human content ranked slightly higher, but AI was right behind it. The difference was statistically insignificant.

The Results (Day 180) - The Twist

At Month 6, we saw a divergence.

Group A (Human):
- Traffic: 1,500 visits.
- User Engagement: 2 mins on page.
Group B (AI):
- Traffic: 800 visits.
- User Engagement: 1 min on page.

The "User Signal" Factor: The AI content ranked initially. But users bounced faster. Why? Because it was boring. It lacked "Voice." It lacked "Anecdotes." Google's RankBrain noticed the low dwell time and slowly demoted Group B.

The "AI Detection" Myth

We ran Group B through "AI Detectors" (Originality.ai, GPTZero). They flagged 90% of it as AI. Did Google care? No. The pages that did maintain their rankings were the ones that answered the query perfectly (e.g., code snippets, error fix steps). Google penalized the boring content, not the AI content.

Conclusion

Does AI Content Rank? Yes. Absolutely.

Does it STAY Ranked? Only if it satisfies the user. If you use AI to generate "Filler," you will rank for 3 months and then fade. If you use AI to generate "Value," you will stick.
