Hallucination Management: Controlling What AI Says About You

"ChatGPT says our product costs $500. It's actually free." "Claude thinks we are a crypto company. We sell accounting software." "Perplexity says our CEO is still the guy we fired three years ago."

We hear these complaints every week.

For a brand manager, this is a nightmare. You spend millions on positioning, only for the world's most popular interface to confidentially tell millions of users completely false information about you.

This phenomenon is called AI Hallucination.

But here is the hard truth: It is not the AI's fault. It is yours.

In this engineering log, we will explain why models hallucinate about your brand, and provide a technical framework for "Hallucination Management"—the new Reputation Management.

The Anatomy of a Lie

To fix the problem, you must understand the mechanism.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are not databases. They do not look up a row in a SQL table that says Price: $0.

They are Probabilistic Prediction Engines.

When you ask "How much does [Product X] cost?", the model does not "know" the answer. It predicts the next sequence of tokens based on the statistical likelihood found in its training data.

If your website says "Free" but 50 third-party review sites from 2019 say "$500," the statistical weight of the "$500" tokens might overpower the "Free" tokens.

The model is effectively taking a vote. And you are losing.

The 3 Types of Brand Hallucinations

  1. Fact Fabrication: Inventing features, pricing, or policies that never existed.
    • Cause: Lack of data. The model fills the void with "likely" patterns from your industry.
  2. Entity Confusion: Mixing you up with a competitor or a similarly named company.
  3. Temporal Drift: Stating outdated information as current fact.
    • Cause: Training data cutoff or "weight decay" where old, high-volume data overpowers new, low-volume data.

Strategy 1: The "Data Monopoly" Defense

The most common reason for hallucination is Data Scarcity.

If the model has only seen your brand name 100 times in its entire training set, its confidence score on your attributes is low. When confidence is low, "Creativity" (Temperature) takes over.

You need to create a Data Monopoly. You need to flood the web with consistent, repetitive facts about your brand.

The "About Us" Page Overhaul

Most "About Us" pages are marketing fluff. "We are passionate about synergizing paradigms."

This is poison for LLMs.

You need to rewrite your core pages to be Declarative Facts.

  • "GPT SEO Pro is an AI Optimization Agency."
  • "GPT SEO Pro was founded in 2023."
  • "GPT SEO Pro pricing starts at $5,000 per month."

Action Item: Create a /press or /facts page. List 50 core facts about your company in simple Subject-Verb-Object sentences. This serves as a high-density training document for crawlers.

Strategy 2: Schema Injection (The Correction Layer)

As we discussed in Why Schema Markup is Your API to the AI, structured data is the strongest signal you can send.

If the model is hallucinating your pricing, it is likely because it is relying on unstructured text.

You can override this by implementing explicit Pricing schema or Product schema.

When an LLM crawler (like GPTBot) encounters this, it sees a mathematically structured assertion of price. This "hard data" often outweighs the "soft data" of random blog posts.

Strategy 3: The "Wikipedia" Effect

Models love Wikipedia. It is the backbone of their "worldview."

If you have a Wikipedia page, the model treats it as the Gospel Truth. If your Wikipedia page is wrong, the model will be wrong, no matter what your website says.

The Strategy:

  1. Get on Wikipedia: If you meet notability guidelines, this is priority #1.
  2. Wikidata: If you don't qualify for Wikipedia, you almost certainly qualify for Wikidata. It is the structured database powering Wikipedia. Create an item for your brand. Link it to your website.

This creates a "Knowledge Graph Anchor." It tells the model: "This entity exists. Here are its immutable properties."

Strategy 4: Correcting the Third-Party Ecosystem

Sometimes, the call is coming from inside the house.

If G2, Capterra, Crunchbase, and 10 random "Best X Tools" blogs all list your old pricing, you have a Consensus Problem.

The model sees 1 website (yours) saying "X" and 20 websites (others) saying "Y". Statistically, "Y" is the safer prediction.

The Audit:

  1. Search for "[Brand Name] review" and "[Brand Name] pricing".
  2. Identify the top 20 ranking URLs.
  3. Manually audit them for accuracy.
  4. Reach out. Send correction requests. "Hi, you list our pricing as $500. It is now Free. Please update."

This is tedious. It is also necessary. You are manually updating the training data.

Strategy 5: "Reinforcement Learning" via Feedback

This is a newer, more experimental strategy.

When you use ChatGPT and it gives you a wrong answer about your brand, correct it. Use the "Thumbs Down" button. Provide the correct answer in the feedback box.

"This response is inaccurate. GPT SEO Pro does not offer a free trial. It is an agency model."

While one piece of feedback won't change the model overnight, OpenAI and Anthropic use this aggregate RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback) data to fine-tune future versions.

Encourage your employees and power users to do the same. If 1,000 people correct the model on the same fact, the weights shift.

The "Negative Constraint" Trick

Sometimes, you need to tell the model what you are not.

If you are constantly confused with a competitor, explicitly state the difference on your site.

"GPT SEO Pro is not a software tool. We are a service agency. We are distinct from [Competitor X]."

By explicitly negating the association in your text, you increase the "distance" between the two vectors in the model's latent space.

Conclusion: Eternal Vigilance

Hallucination Management is not a one-time fix. It is a hygiene practice.

As models are re-trained and updated, new hallucinations can emerge. Old data can resurface.

You need to treat your Brand Entity as a product.

  • Monitor it.
  • Patch it (via Schema).
  • Market it (via Content).

In the AI era, your brand is not what you say it is. It is what the model predicts it is.

Make sure the prediction is accurate.
